    January 4-8 (Google Classroom #0017)

    Students will read the story, "Sca-a-a-a-a-a-ry Jobs". They will identify the characteristics of an interview, learn new vocabulary, determine if something is a fact or an opinion, identify root words, and understand the parts of a non-fiction text page. They will take an end of selection test on Thursday. Students will begin Unit 7 by completing ABC Order, Definitions, and Sentences.

    January 11-15 (Google Classroom #0018)

    Students will read the story, "My Man Blue". They will identify the characteristics of a story in poetry, learn new vocabulary, practice using a dictionary, make inferences, and understand characterization. They will take an end of selection test on Thursday. Students will complete a spelling assignment and take a test on Unit 7 on Friday.

     

    January 18-22 (Google Classroom #0019)

    Students will begin to read the novel, "Number the Stars" by learning about the author and learning about the events in history that surround the setting of the novel. They will read Chapters 1 and 2, learn new story vocabulary, and answer literal, inferential, and opinion-based questions from their reading. Students will also complete ABC Order, Definitions, and Sentences from Unit 8 in spelling.

    January 25-29 (Google Classroom #0020

    Students will continue reading chapters 2 and 3. They will take a vocabulary quiz on vocabulary from chapters 1-3. They will will answer questions and begin reading chapter 4. 

    February 1-5 (Google Classroom #0021)

    Students will take the iReady Diagnostic Assessment. They will continue reading chapter 4, answer comprehension questions, and take a chapter 3 and 4 quiz on Quizizz. Student will complete a spelling assignment and take the Unit 8 test on Friday.

    February 8-12 (Google Classroom #0022)

    Students will read a Newsela Article and complete ABC Order, Definitions, and Sentences for chapter 9. They will read chapters 5 and 6 in "Number the Stars" and answer comprehension questions. Students will take a Chapter 1-5 Test on Thursday.

    February 15-19 (Google Classroom #0023)

    Students will take the Bridges to Literature Mid-Year Assessment. They will go over chapter 6 comprehension questions, take a vocabulary quiz from chapters 4-6, take a Chapter 5/6 quiz on Quizizz, and begin reading chapter 7.     2019-2020 School Year

    Reading and Writing for September 2-6, 2019

    This week we will begin the year by reviewing policies and procedures.  We will complete an "all about me" activity.

    September 9-13

    This week we will begin our spelling units. We will take the beginning of the year reading assessments.

    September 16-20

    This week students will begin using SRA Mastery to strengthen their decoding and word attack skills. They will review elements of a story and figurative language.

    September 23-27

    Students will take the iReady Benchmark Assessment. They will continue to learn decoding and word attack strategies.

    September 30-October 4

    Students will continue to learn word attack and decoding skills through the SRA Reading Mastery program. They will review the definition, characteristics, and examples of Non-Fiction. They will also learn comprehension skills by reading stories in Bridges to Literature, Newsela, and Raz-Kids.

    October 7-11

    Students will continue to learn strategies for decoding and word attack by completing lessons in SRA Reading Mastery. They will also learn vocabulary from the story, "Kenny Roberts: King of the Road" by creating a slide show. They will practice reading skills using iReady instruction.

    October 14-18

    Students will continue to learn strategies for decoding and worrd attack by completing lessons in SRA Reading Mastery. They will also review idioms and learn how to use context clues in order to understand their meanings. They will practice reading skills using iReady instruction.

    October 21-25 

    Students will take the Reading Mastery #2 test. They will read the story "Kenny Roberts: King of the Road". They will learn how to evaluate an article, determine the author's purpose, and review idioms.

    October 28-November 1

    Students will begin to read the story "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. They will learn about the author, story vocabulary, figurative language, the elements of a story, the author's purpose for writing, and how to identify the theme over the next 6 weeks or so.

    November 11-15

    Students will continue to read the story "A Christmas Carol". They will continue to learn about Charles Dickens, vocabulary, the elements of a story, the author's purpose for writing and the theme. Students will begin to edit and publish their summer activity story.

    November 18-22

    Students will continue to read the story, "A Christmas Carol". They will learn new vocabulary, characterization, figurative language, and take a test on Stave 2.

    November 25-29

    Students will not have a spelling unit this week due to the short week. They will begin reading Stave 3 from "A Christmas Carol". There will be 1/2 a class on Tuesday due to the Thanksgiving Feast and no class on Wednesday due to the "Turkey Shoot".

    December 2-6

    Students will continue to read Stave 3 from "A Christmas Carol". They will take a vocabulary quiz from Stave 3 and answer comprehension questions. They will take a Stave 3 test.

    December 9-13

    Students will finish reading "A Christmas Carol". They will go to McCarter Theatre to watch the play of "A Christmas Carol" They will compare and contrast the play and they story.

    December 16-20

    Students will finish reading "A Christmas Carol" and take the end of story test. They will continue to compare and contrast the play and novella by completing a Venn Diagram

    December 30-January 3

    Students will use their Venn Diagram to write a compare/contrast essay.

    January 6-10

    Students will take the iReady mid-year Benchmark Assessment. They will continue to learn decoding and word attack skills by continuing the SRA Reading Mastery program. Students will continue to publish their compare/contrast essays.

    January 13-17

    Students will continue to learn decoding and word attack skills by completing lessons from the SRA Reading Mastery program. Students will begin to read the article "Water Woman" by learning the characteristics of a "true account", defining story vocabulary, and by reading for fluency and comprehension. Students will also review sequence, author's purpose, specialized vocabulary, and take an end of selection test.

    January 20-24

    Students will continue to learn decoding and word attack skills by completing the lessons from SRA Reading Mastery. They will complete lessons on iReady Pathways. They will real about real-world problems through Newsela and answer comprehension questions about the articles they read. Students will write on given topics.

    January 27-31

    Students will continue to learn new decoding and word attack skills by completing lessons from SRA Reading Mastery. They will also complete lessons on iReady. Students will begin to read a biography called, "Satchel Paige: The Best Arm in Baseball". Students will review the characteristics of a biography and define new words. They will read the story for fluency and comprehension.

    February 3-7

    Students will continue to learn skills for decoding and word attack by completing lessons in SRA Reading Mastery. They will continue to complete lessons on iReady. Students will begin to gather information by researching a famous African American in order to create a slide presentation.

    February 10-14

    Students will continue to learn skills for decoding and word attack by completing lessons in SRA Reading Mastery. They will continue to complete lessons on iReady. They will also complete a flyer by using Google Docs and continue to do research on a famous African American.

    February 17-21

    Students will take a mid-year reading assessment through Bridges to Literature. They will continue to do research and then start to create a slide show based on that research. They will also complete lessons on iReady.

    February 24-28

    Students will continue to learn word attack and decoding skills. They will continue to complete lessons on iReady. They will continue to find research on a famous African American.

    March 2-6

    Students will continue to work on their research project and begin creating slides from the research. They will complete lessons on iReady. Students will learn skills for decoding and word attack through the SRA Reading Mastery Program. They will reivew author's purpose, context clues, and distinguish between fact and opinion by reading, "I Am Rosa Parks".

    March 9-13

    Students will continue to learn skills for decoding and word attack through the SRA Reading Master Program. They will learn the "Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then" Method for summarizing stories. They will start presenting their Google Slide shows.

     

    2018-2019 School Year

    October 15-19

    Students will learn the characteristics of realistic fiction by reading "The Fish Story". They will learn new vocabulary, review compound words, determine the cause/effect relationships in the story, and identify the conflict. They will continue to learn new figurative languange and write narrative stories.

    October 22-26

    This week students will review the genre of "fable" by reading "The Turtle and the Swan". They will practice dictionary skills, review predicting, and understand characterization. Students will practice figurative language.

    October 26-November 2

    This week students will write a narrative story based on their favorite holiday. They will also begin a unit on poetry by learning the characteristics of a poem and the elements of poetry such as: form, rhythm, metaphors, and imagery. They will review figurative language and take a quiz.

    November 12-16

    Students will finish editing and publishing their narrative stories. They will learn the characteristics of a non-fiction "true account". They will learn new vocabulary, review cause/effect relationships, chronological order, and compound words. 

    November 19-23

    Students will continue to read their "true account" by reading, "The Titanic: Lost and Found" and taking an end of unit test.

    November 26-30

    Students will learn the characteristics of an informative article. They will learn new vocabulary, how to identify the main idea, understand context clues, and look for details in writing. They will continue to publish their narrative writing and illustrate their writing.

    December 3-7

    Students will learn the characteristics and structural form of a feature article. They will learn new story vocabulary, understand synonyms, and identify the main idea and details for each story heading. They will continue to illustrate and conference with the teacher on their narrative writing.

    December 10-14

    Students will begin a poetry unit by learning about the characteristics of a poem, form, rhythm, and how a poem can tell a story. They will review the figurative language of metaphor and imagery. Students will create their own poems using form. They will continue to conference with the teacher on their narrative writing.

    December 17-21

    Students will continue to work on their holiday writing assignment. They will complete their acrostic poem.

    December 31-January 4

    Students will work on reading skills by using the iReady instruction program. They will complete their narrative writing.

    January 7-11

    Students will read the story, "Sachiko Means Happiness". They will learn new story vocabulary, review affixes, draw conclusions, and identify the climax of a story. Students will also begin a reading program called SRA Reading Mastery. They will learn decoding and word attack skills in order to read more fluently.

    January 14-18

    Students will continue the SRA Reading Mastery program. They will also be taking the iReady Reading Mid Year Diagnostic Test.

    January 21-25

    This week students will continue to learn word attack skills through the SRA Reading Mastery program. The will learn new story vocabulary and review how to use context clues to identify unknown words as they begin to read the story, "Three Hundred Pesos".

    January 28-February 1

    Students will continue to learn word attack skills through the SRA Reading Mastery Program. They will continue to read "Three Hundred Pesos" and learn to compare/contrast characters and how to identify the characteristics of a folktale. They will take an end of selection test.

    February 4-8

    Students will continue to learn word attack skills through the SRA Reading Mastery Program. They will practice reading skills by completing instruction on iReady. They will review myths by introducing "Phoenix Farm" and by learning new story vocabulary. 

    February 11-15

    Students will continue to learn word attack skills through the SRA Reading Mastery Program. They will practice reading skills by completing instruction on iReady. They will continue to read "Phoenix Farm". Students will review how to break a word down into syllables in order to decode better.

    February 18-22

    Students will continue to learn word attack skills through the SRA Reading Mastery Program. They will practice reading skills by completing instruction on iReady. They will learn about current events related to President's Day by reading Newsela articles and completing activities related to the article.

    February 25-March 1

    Students will complete a reading skills assessment for "Bridges to Literature".

    March 4-8

    Students will contine to learn word attack skills through the SRA Reading Mastery Program. They will learn the characteristics of a novel excerpt and new vocabulary for the story, "Whitewashing the Fence". They will review the figurative language of idioms.

    March 11-15

    Students will continue to learn word attack skills through the SRA Reading Mastery Program. They will practice reading skills by completing instruction on iReady. They will continue reading "Whitewashing" the Fence". They will understand character motive and how to make a judgement about a character or their actions. Students will take an end of selection test.

    March 18-22

    Students will continue to learn word attack skills through the SRA Reading Mastery Program. They will practice reading skills by completing instruction on iReady. They will learn new story vocabulary from the story, "A Dinner of Smells". They will review the characteristics of a folktale and synonyms.

    March 25-29

    Students will continue to learn word attack skills through the SRA Reading Mastery Program. They will also learn about using context clues to understand multiple meaning words, how to compare and contrast two characters in a story, and how to identify the theme of a story by reading the fold tale, "The Debate in Sign Language".

    April 1-5

    Students will continue to learn word attack skills through the SRA Reading Mastery Program. They will review compound words and complete a project by using Google Slides to portray the definition in words and pictures of their vocabulary words. Students will learn how to write better answers by restating the question.

    April 8-12

    Students will learn how to write compare and contrast essays. They will read the short story, "Fifteen Minutes" and identify cause/effect relationships from the story and identify the dialogue. They will take an end of selection test.

    April 22-26

    Students will write a compare/contrast essay. They will continue to write dialogue and practice for the upcoming NJSLA testing.

    April 29-May 3

    Students will begin to learn about the setting and vocabulary for their chapter book, "The Breadwinner". They will begin to read for fluency and comprehension.

    May 6-May 10

    Students will finish taking the NJSLA. They will continue to read, "The Breadwinner" for fluency and comprehension. They will take a quiz on story vocabulary.

    May 13-May 17

    Students will continue to read and answer questions about the novel, "The Breadwinner". They will take a test on chapters 1-5. They will learn new vocabulary for chapters 6-10.

    May 20-May 24

    Students will continue to read "The Breadwinner". They will take a vocabulary quiz on chapters 6-10. They will take a chapter 6-10 test.

    May 27-May 31

    Students will take the end of year iReady Diagnostice Assessment. They will learn new vocabulary for chapters 11-15 in "The Breadwinner". They will begin to read chapters 11-15 for fluency and comprehension.

    June 3-June 7

    Students will take the end of year "Bridges to Literature" assessment. They will continue to read "The Breadwinner" for fluency and comprehension.

    June 10-June 14

    Students will finish their end of year "Bridges to Literature" assessment. They will finish reading "The Breadwinner" and take the test over chapters 11-15.

    June 17-June 19

    Students will finish all unfinished work. They will complete their "Breadwinner" letter and the final spelling review quiz.
